What Is Powerful?
Agency and autonomy are two of the most sought after characteristics today.
The ability to do what you want when you want.
The concept behind agency and autonomy is power. It is the power to do what you want when you want it that you are searching for.
While I am still waiting for that day to arrive I like to ask myself in certain situations “what would be powerful?”
Power comes from having the ability to do something but not doing or vise versa.
Simple example is that I have the ability to get drunk every night but I chose not to.
That is a power over alcohol to use it in moderation or not at all.
That example makes sense due to the harmful effects of alcohol addiction but the question of “what is powerful?” can take you much deeper than that.
Having power sets you apart. Doing things that are powerful are true differentiators for yourself.
That is because for an act to be powerful it takes sacrifice.
You have the ability to outwork your coworkers but doing so will take a level of sacrifice that ultimately transform into powerfulness.
The most common example of something that is powerful is forgiving someone who has wronged you.
You are the victim of someone else’s actions, everyone expects you to “make it right” fight for justice, get even.
But what is powerful in that situation? Getting even or forgiving and moving on?
I am not advocating for going spineless and becoming a pushover.
I am advocating for us to at least consider alternative solutions for the problems we face everyday. For us to consider the question “What is powerful?”
The answer you come up with could be something that sets you apart form the world we live in.
Powerfulness is doing something positive that no one expects you to do.
The next time you are cut off in traffic, struggling in your job, or faced with a difficult decision - ask yourself “what would be powerful?”
The answer could surprise you.
Sacrifice and be powerful.
