Increase Your Agency 

Agency is a scarcely used word that can serve as one of the greatest compliments to those whom deserve it.

The best definition of agency I have found is the capacity, condition, or state of acting or exerting power.

Agency is your sense of control. It is your ability to influence your surroundings.

Too many people in this world lack agency.

They are poor because the government takes their money. They are miserable because their boss is a jerk.

Since they lack agency, the ability to influence their surroundings, they are instead being influenced by their surroundings.

As we continue to set out on this journey of differentiation, it is our job to influence our surroundings. It is our responsibility to increase our agency for our family, for our friends, and for our Tribe.

Jacko Wilkins would describe agency as your ability to take extreme ownership of a situation.

In Wilikin’s Ted Talks he explains about the power of taking ownership and accountability to the next level.

Wilikins refuses to let a victim mindset run his life. Instead he focuses on what he can control.

The Stoics have a quote that says “It is not in our control to have everything turn out exactly as we want, but it is in our control to control how we respond to what happens.”

At the end of the day you cannot control anything but yourself. You are the one who decides how you respond. You are the only who can turn a negative into a positive. You are the one who can refuse to settle for a victim mindset and start influencing your surroundings.

The best place to start is in your mind. Belief often comes before action.

If you are unsatisfied in an area of your life, you have the power and the agency to change it. You have the ability to influence your surroundings.

It is challenging. It will be difficult. But never lose sight of your ability to make a difference by increasing your agency.

You owe it to yourself to the make the most out of your life. And one of the first steps is understanding that you have agency.
