I wrote about liminal spaces two years ago but I wanted to bring it back as we enter into the summer.
Liminal spaces are “in-between” times in our lives.
They are moments when one chapter has ended but the next chapter has yet to start.
These moments are some of the most important times in our lives yet most people don’t even know they exist.
There are two types of liminal spaces: Known & Unknown.
A known liminal space is when you know what the next chapter is.
For example, when you graduate from 9th grade, you enter into a known liminal space for the summer because you know you will be going into 10th grade.
An unknown liminal space is when you do not know the next chapter.
For example, you graduate college and do not have a job lined up.
Both of these spaces are important and impactful because you are moving on to something different.
When you move on, you move past everything that you have known and you enter into unfamiliar grounds.
This means opportunity for growth.
Liminal spaces are transition periods where the ground you used to stand on has fallen away.
You are often left by yourself with your old source of comfort, security, or even identify left behind you.
You might be able to see your new chapter or your new path ahead of you but it could be days, weeks, or even months away.
This is when you get to find out who you really are.
This is when you get to reflect on your wins and loses.
This is when you get to dream for what is ahead.
I challenge you to be on the lookout for liminal spaces in your life and take advantage of them.
It could be a job transition, changing schools, maternity leave, or anything that provides a prolonged break.
These are sacred times that we can take advantage of in our own lives.
Go out and make a difference.
