Embrace Liminal Space
The word Liminal means in between. It can be defined as leaving one room but not yet entering another room. If we pay attention we can see liminal spaces throughout our life and transformation happens in liminal spaces.
Discover the In-Between
When was the last time you finished a season of life but have not started the next? This is a liminal space. The most common liminal space is built into the school year, with Christmas and Summer breaks. But as we move on through life, liminal spaces become less frequent and frankly more sacred. These spaces look like the transition from job to job, taking a vacation after a long quarter, or even a tough break up. Liminal spaces are sacred times in your life that are void of your control. These are specific moments in your life when you do not know what is next. You have left your current room but have yet to enter the next.
The Gold
It is this place of uncertainty that leaves us open and available for new ideas. Within these moments, we are forced to face the truth of the situation and address what is in front of us. That is when the gold shows up and we start to learn, grow, and develop.
When Do Liminal Spaces Come?
Liminal spaces are the best place for learning, growing, and developing. That is why it should be our mission to enter into liminal spaces as often as possible. The good news is that liminal spaces will come whenever you want them to. You can enter into a liminal space by choosing a season where you intentionally disrupt your normal life. This can look like being extra generous, working out twice a day, or spending 30 minutes in solitude in the middle of your day. Liminal spaces are available and it is the place where your life can change forever. Pursue the wisdom in the in-between.
Challenge: Enter a liminal space. Decide to commit to something or get rid of something for a specific period. Then let the uncomfortably and uncertainty give you direction and purpose. Go pursue the wisdom in the in-between.
Go out. Make a Difference.
