What is the highest good?
This question has been stuck in my brain recently.
It is an impossible question to answer directly because it is based on context.
For example, eating an entire bag of Nerds Clusters on a random Tuesday night is objectively not the highest good for me.
But those same Nerds Cluster could help a diabetic whose blood sugar is extremely low.
The context matters.
That is a silly example but you get my point.
Good, the highest good, is hard to define without context.
But more often than not, we live our life within context.
Which gives us a better chance at pursuing the highest good.
Using Occam’s razor, pursuing the highest good breaks down into two parts:
Asking the question
Then doing it
I find myself asking this question all the time: what is the highest good in this moment?
It is a grounding question that helps you filter through the negative emotions or the resistance you feel around something you know you should do.
To my surprise, the answer to the question usually comes quickly.
If you are able to be honest with yourself, you will know what the highest good is.
The second part is the harder part.
Doing it.
Picking up your feet and moving toward the highest good.
Who cares if you knew what the highest good was? Did you DO the highest good?
It is action, not intent, that sets people apart.
I challenge you this week to ask yourself that question today.
What is the highest good for you right now?
Find your answer than action on it.
Go out and make a difference.
