Simple. Simple. Simple.
Life is very complicated.
And on top of that, we are very good at complicating everything we touch.
How many things in our life are truly simple? And should they be?
Simplicity is related to ease as complexity is to difficulty.
The way to simplify, is to make it easier.
James Clear, in Atomic Habits, prescribes that we should reduce the friction between our good habits.
And increase the friction towards our bad habits.
Another way of saying that is to simplify the path towards what is good for us.
While also complicating the path that is not good for us.
It is about building simple systems that work for you.
An example I talk about often is going to the gym.
Getting in shape is complicated and can be intimidating.
You have to count your calories, find a gym, create a work out plan, stay hydrated, and avoid the foods that you know are bad for you.
Each one of those steps has more steps inside of them.
Are you counting macros? What gym do you like? How do you know which workout plan to follow? Do you need electrolytes?
Then we get mad at ourselves for not going to them gym.
Complicated.
Instead, we can reduce and simplify.
Instead of trying to tackle everything at once. Let’s use everything we have to tackle one thing.
Maybe that is finding a gym that does workout classes, so all you have to do is just show up.
Maybe that is eating healthy by cutting out unnecessary snacking and sweets.
Just do one thing first. Prove to yourself you can do it.
Then add in the next step.
It is the best way to eat elephant or whatever that weird saying is.
The first step towards any goal, dream, or desired outcome should be to simplify.
Slow is smooth and smooth is fast.
Go out and simplify. Go out and make a difference.
