Self Reputation
Self esteem is the reputation you have with yourself.
If you tell yourself you are going to workout will you work out?
Do you show up for yourself like you show up for your friends?
You wouldn’t make lunch plans with a friend then never show up.
Ultimately the reason this is unacceptable is because you are disrespecting your friend.
Yet we all have friends who have received the unfornatue “flake” label. This label comes from a pattern of saying you will show up then not showing up.
In the same way our friend earned this reputation, we can earn this reputation with ourselves.
It is interesting how we will do whatever it takes to avoid disrespecting others yet we so easily disrespect ourselves.
What is your reputation with the person you see in the mirror?
Consistently showing up for ourselves builds a pattern of self respect. By doing the actions you have set out for yourself you start building credibility.
Rule two in Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules For Life says, “Treat yourself like somebody your are responsible for helping.”
Another way of saying that is, “Love yourself like somebody you love.”
You would not bail on a friend, so why would you bail on yourself?
Often times my seasons of low self esteem are caused by broken promises I have made with myself.
The beautiful part is that we have the power and autonomy to change that. We can start showing up for ourselves today.
We can change the pattern, shake the flake label, and start trusting our promises again.
Start today. Build the momentum. Give yourself a reason to respect yourself again.
Then go out and make a difference.
