One More
Building Grit
When you are doing something hard (but good) it is imperative to control your thoughts.
As humans, we are very good at justifying any reason to stop doing the challenging tasks.
I often compare these negative thoughts as monkeys on my back. They are doing everything they can to get me to stop-
and I am doing everything I can to silence them.
In doing hard things, I have noticed something:
The monkeys get louder as the end gets closer.
They want you to stop short, to give up early:
“You’ve already done so much.”
“You’ve already gone so far.”
“You deserve to end early.”
As the end is in sight, the monkeys attack even harder.
The mind gets weaker as the end gets closer.
Before I get into a solution for this let me preface something:
This concept is one of the hardest practices to implement, but it is one of the best practices you can implement to help differentiate yourself.
And that is the concept of One More.
It is as simple as it sounds. You do more than what is expected.
The best way to silence the monkeys is to show them up.
They say end your run half a mile short. You run an extra half mile.
They say you can finish the project tomorrow. You finish it tonight.
They say stop at good enough. You aim for excellence.
You do one more.
Go out and do one more. Go out and make a difference.
