How To Get Out Of A Rut

What Is Your Content Consumption?

Everyone has experienced a mental rut in their lifetime. This is a season of life where apathy unfortunately rules over us. This week we will discuss a way to lift your head above the mundanity of life and find the spark you were created to fan into a flame. Let’s dive in.

The Problem

Now and then we lose our thirst for life and the majority of the world seems to not even want that thirst back in the first place. I believe that most people do not even know they are in a rut. They have been living this way for so long that their rut is their life. I refuse to let that sentiment be the narrative of my life and more importantly anyone's life inside of my Tribe.

1 Simple Step

We could spend the next 500 words discussing why ruts happen. While that is valuable for you to examine on your own time I want to instead offer you one simple step to help you start the journey of “filling in” your ruts to enable you to continue pursuing life the way life should be pursued. This simple step is curating your content consumption.

Curate Content Consumption

Garbage in; Garbage out. What if the quality of your life was determined by the content you consumed? Similar to how your energy levels are determined by the food you eat; your mental energy is often determined by the content you consume. If your mental energy is drained and this rut feels like it is getting deeper and deeper try taking an inventory of the content you are consuming. Start by checking your screen time usage to find out exactly how much time you are spending on social media and entertainment. Write down every piece of content you consume in a week. That includes Netflix shows, podcasts, books, etc. After gathering the data, examine which piece of content added value to your life. Find the content on the list you are proud you consumed and double down on those pieces of content. New ideas (or breakthroughs) comes from learning and learning is the lifeblood of growing and growing is the antidote for ruts.

If you are in a rut you do not need to cut your hair, rearrange your room, or quit your job. You need to consume better content. Start with this simple step and remember that time is your most valuable resource. Spend it wisely on content that enables you to love your future self.
