Why Being Bored Is a Good Thing
Boredom Leads to Innovation
Welcome back to the newsletter that gives you the tools to stand out in a crowded world. Thank you for investing 10 minutes every week to read this newsletter. With the amount of content circulating the world, I am honored to receive a small portion of your most valuable resource, your time. I aim to steward the time you are investing into this newsletter well. Much love.
Being Bored is Good
But… being bored is the worst. Due to having the entire world at our fingertips the state of boredom can be fairly hard to come by now. While most people will say that is a good thing, I am here to say that it is not a good thing at all and here is why.
Do you remember being a kid and hanging out with your friends on the weekend? If you are anything like me, those weekends are filled with fun memories of a bunch of middle school boys doing the dumbest things imaginable like dressing up in crazy costumes to harass the poor Walmart employees making $8 an hour… While reflecting on it now I know it was dumb but I wondered how a bunch of dumb immature boys come up with an idea like that. I realized the idea emerged from sheer unrelentless boredom. By embracing boredom my friends and I were able to come up with an idea that created a memory we will cherish for the rest of our lives.
Embrace Boredom
Boredom is one of the only states of being that people will do anything to get out of. Unfortunately, this leads to us finding any necessary vice to help alleviate the pain of boredom. We turn to Instagram, TikTok, or Netflix to help us keep our minds somewhat occupied for the time being. That is what your co-workers, peers, and friends do, but that is not who we are as Differentiators. We are intentionally set apart for the betterment of ourselves and our tribe.
I want to challenge you today to embrace boredom. When boredom hits you today fight the urge to find some quick distraction and instead think. Think about the content you consumed yesterday or the next item on your to-do list. If you embrace boredom and fight off easy distractions you will be amazed by what your mind comes up with. Boredom leads to innovation, it leads to new crazy fun ideas but unfortunately, this world is too distracted to realize that. By embracing boredom and instead running from it might lead to the idea you have been searching for.
Practicals:
The Problem: How do you respond to boredom in your daily life? Positively or Negatively?
The Motivation: Why is this your response to boredom? If your response is negative check to see what it is you are trying to distract yourself from. This can be difficult at times but it is worth the pursuit.
The Game Plan: Instead of running from boredom, embrace it. Sit in the boredom and let your mind reflect on the past, assess where you are at, and dream towards the future and let your boredom carry you to new ideas.
