The best things in life come from acquired taste.

I think we are aware of this from a literal taste perspective.

As a kid, I couldn’t understand how my mom could eat dark chocolate.

Now, as a grown up, it is one of my favorite treats.

We see how this concept of acquired taste works from a biological perspective, but I think it also works from a psychological perspective.

Acquired taste is the process it takes to learn to love something.

You have to learn to love it because it’s typically bitter at first.

From a biological perspective, think sparkling water, whiskey, wine, or black coffee.

From a more psychological perspective, think about working out, reading, or eating healthy.

Just like our normal taste buds naturally crave sweets, our psychological taste buds naturally crave comfort.

We have to learn to love discomfort.

How do we acquire new taste?

Repeated exposure.

When I started drinking coffee I really wanted to be able to drink black coffee.

Mainly because I thought it was cool and because I was embarrassed to order an iced vanilla latte with oat milk and easy ice at Starbucks…

So I decided to force myself to drink black coffee everyday.

Within a couple weeks I started to love it.

I wish there was something more profound or groundbreaking to help acquire new taste, but it is really that simple.

If you don’t like reading then read until you start liking it.

If you hate working out then workout until you start liking it.

Eating healthy? The same thing.

The best things in life come from acquired taste, so learn to acquire the taste.

Go out and acquire taste. Go out and make a difference.

With each week of content I do my best to compress my ideas into as few words as possible. That is the medium I am focusing on and the skill I want to develop. Occasionally on certain topics I am unable to go as deep as I would like to due to that restraint.

If you would be interested in receiving a “deeper dive” newsletter on some of the topics discussed that does not have this restraint would you reply back to this email with any emoji?

Would love to gage the interest level from my audience:)
